2018 SBF CSA Week #8

Happy Independence Week!  Tomato season is in full swing here at the farm!  Tomatoes are one of those items that are only worth eating when they are in season and vine ripened.  Also, this week you are receiving the first garlic of the season.  There are two different garlic families — hardneck/stiffneck and softneck.  The variety you have this week is from the hardneck garlic family.  Just a couple of quick, fun facts about garlic.  Softneck garlic, which is the garlic most often found at your grocery store, stores better than hardneck.  Only hardneck garlic produces a scape — which you received scapes earlier in the season.  Scapes are cut approximately 1 month before the garlic is ready to harvest.  Softneck garlic has a more mild flavor.  However, hardneck garlic has more complex flavors.  I’ve included a picture below to show the different ways in which the bulb forms.  You’ll be getting a few hardneck varieties this season along with a softneck variety.  See which variety you like best!  Lastly, there is fresh cut stevia in the cooler this week.  Stevia is a natural, calorie-free sweetener.  Chop the fresh leaves for your morning cereal, use it to make simple syrup, dry it, mince leaves for your fresh fruit salad.  The options are abundant.  1/8 teaspoon of stevia is equivlent to 1 teaspoon of sugar.  Here’s to a happy and safe Independence Day!!
